Florence , South Carolina

Community Background
Florence is located in Florence County. Founded in 1850, the town of Florence was the vision of entrepreneurs and was built around the opportunities of the Wilmington & Manchester Railroad. General William W. Harlee (1812-1897) constructed the first rail lines here, and in his honor, the town was named after his daughter. Florence County took its name from the town, its county seat. The community quickly grew into an important transportation center for the Pee Dee, a nine-county region that was originally drained by the Great Pee Dee River. In later years, tobacco became a major industry for the county. For more than 30 years, Florence-Darlington Technical College has been serving the needs of Pee Dee residents by offering quality educational programs that support economic development for the citizens of Florence, Darlington and Marion counties. Francis Marion University also supports scholarly pursuits in order to promote academic development and intellectual stimulation. This four-year university strives to provide the Pee Dee region with a variety of educational and cultural enrichment services. Florence is situated in the heart of eight counties between the Piedmont and Coastal regions of the state and is the center for trade, industry, medicine, transportation, culture, finance, and education in the Pee Dee region. Interstate 95 passes through Florence, which is the origin/terminus of I-20. Florence County combines southern charm and easy living with all the amenities and exciting opportunities of big city life.
